Function / Content

This series consists of topographic survey maps held and customised by the Department of Lands Planning and Environment but using the base maps produced by the Division of National Mapping and known as the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS). The maps show the following information as explained in the legends: populated places and homesteads are named and shown by symbols; railways delineated; roads classified by surface width and weather reliability; vegetation symbolized; foreshore and off-shore detail shown. Each sheet includes an index to adjoining sheets and a universal grid reference. A total of 544 sheets comprising the NTMS series provided the first nationwide coverage of published, fully contoured, topographic maps. Of particular interest in this series are the customised overlays for pastoral areas and the Tietkens expedition 1889 in Centralia Australia, the approximate routes of patrol journeys made during June, July, October, November and December 1935 as part of the Anthropological Survey of Arnhem Land
